Exhibition at London Design Festival
Brompton Design District – 16 until 24 September 2017
‘Other Stories – alternative perspectives on design’
We are very pleased curator Jane Withers gave us the opportunity to present our Dutch initiative Social label. We are presenting our ideas for an inclusive society.
Brompton is the leading design district during London Design Festival. 2017 is the district’s most extensive programme to date, with over 40 exhibits within walking distance of the Victoria and Albert museum. Brompton’s theme, ‘Other Stories – alternative perspectives on design’, set by the programme curator Jane Withers, explores unusual narratives in design and work that stimulates the imagination beyond product. These stories unfold across three large Victorian townhouses in Cromwell Place, nearby garages and temporary exhibition spaces on and around Brompton Road. The district is home to a cluster of the world’s leading design retailers who all stage exhibitions and events for the Festival.
Other Stories will focus on the stories behind design and making, bringing together work by designers and practitioners who have in common the desire to expand the remit of design and stretch the imagination beyond product. The theme is reflected in a cluster of projects that reveal the impact of engaged design and explore the non-design perspectives contributing to this process.
Visitors to the district will encounter the work of groundbreaking practices and individuals supporting social development, from a visionary economist in Newfoundland, to a social enterprise offering an alternative system to cope with contemporary challenges in Malawi. Brompton will showcase a collaboration between Ilse Crawford (STUDIOILSE), and woodworkers Zanat that supports regeneration in Bosnia; furniture made on Fogo Island that proposes a holistic model for supporting small communities; a Dutch movement Social label that is redesigning labour to build a sense of self-worth; and Ineke Hans Salon Projects investigating new perspectives on the design industry.
